Why does the MRI make noise?

Wonder why a MRI makes so much noise?  It is part of the function of how it works.  Inside are gradients and these vibrate together giving of various load and rhymatic sounds.  Ear protection is essential. Whether it is ear plugs or headphone with music, it makes for a more comfortable examination. This article explains a bit further:
